Welcome to Zudy’s Cafe, where incredible food meets a grand piece of Alaskan history.

Our cozy cafe is nestled inside the historic Seward Depot, originally constructed in 1917 as the southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad. This Craftsman-style landmark is one of the town’s ultimate survivors—braving fierce Lowell Creek floods in the 1920s (which prompted the building to be moved to its current location) and withstanding the devastating 1964 Good Friday earthquake and subsequent tsunamis.

Over the past century, many important figures have walked through these doors. Most notably, on July 23, 1923, President Warren G. Harding visited this exact station during his historic "Voyage of Understanding". He greeted a crowd of local residents from the depot before embarking on the train to Nenana, where he drove the legendary ceremonial golden spike to mark the completion of the Alaska Railroad.

Decades later, after serving as a ferry terminal and a native cultural center, the building found its sweetest calling yet. In the mid-1990s, local carpenter Jan Odhner helped renovate the structure, allowing his wife Judy (nicknamed "Zudy") to fulfill her dream of opening a scratch-bakery and cafe.

Today, we proudly continue that legacy of community love and legendary baking, allowing a new generation of locals and travelers to dine in the footsteps of history while enjoying the best waterfront views in town.

OUR STORY

Hi, we are Lena and Daniel Allred!

We took the helm of Zudy’s Cafe to fulfill a lifelong dream of entrepreneurship and to embed ourselves in the community we adore deeply. Between us, we bring over 25 years of restaurant experience to this treasured local mainstay.

For Lena, Seward's tight-knit warmth and breathtaking coastal beauty perfectly mirror her small hometown in Bulgaria. When the opportunity arose to step into Zudy's, we knew it was the perfect fit. We are dedicated to maintaining the same high standards, iconic recipes, and welcoming, down- home atmosphere that you have come to expect.

Our business is a true family affair—you might even catch Daniel’s mom, Nora, working her magic as our head baker, putting heaps of love into our famous dessert cases! Whether you are stopping in for your morning espresso, sharing a hearty lunch panini, or picking up an anniversary cheesecake, we cannot wait to welcome you into our little slice of paradise

Welcome to Zudy’s! Enjoy your cake with a view.
